THE MATRIX

The battle for cinema summer supremacy has begun. The Matrix vs. The Mummy

But who really cares about which one's best? I'd rather see a good action film, and that's what this is.

Staring Keen Reeves and Laurence Fishbone, this is possibly one of the most visually stunning films ever. When I'm at the local Odeon, I will go and see films just for the special effects, simply because they're exciting. For the first hour, the film is not particularly exciting, but it is certainly interesting.

The plot is as follows: The world we live in is not actually real. It is a computer program, designed by machines that took the world over about 200 years ago (a.k.a the Terminator). When the machines discovered they had an unlimited power supply in humans, they started growing them like crops. But to keep the humans happy as they grew, the machines wired their minds into the Matrix - an elaborate computer program that simulated the world that was desecrated by war 200 years ago. Reeves plays a computer hacker, who finds is given a chance to free man-kind by a group of freedom fighters who believe that he is the one that will destroy the matrix, and the machines.

The Matrix uses numerous clever camera tricks, like freezing an action frame, and panning around it before moving on again. This is very effective in giving the film an almost artificial feel (which is what it's actually about).

If you want to make a film with a plot concerning conspiracy, you need mysterious characters. This is supplied by the 'agents' - a group of computer controlled super-humans who can take control of anyone in the Matrix.

It may be a bit slow at first, but the Matrix is a great action film.
